Many wo­men in In­done­sia own a small busi­ness and live on less than $2 a day. The ma­jor­ity use dan­ger­ous, ex­pens­ive ker­osene lights and spend a sig­ni­fic­ant part of their day provid­ing their fam­il­ies with fire­wood and clean wa­ter. Through an in­nov­at­ive mod­el based on fin­an­cial in­clu­sion, Ivy found­a­tion and WakaWaka found­a­tion provide these wo­men with WakaWa­kas.
In March and April 2015, 24 WakaWa­kas were dis­trib­uted mainly to wo­men who are de­pend­ent on tap­ping elec­tri­city from their neigh­bors or on ker­osene. WakaWaka is a re­li­able re­place­ment for un­re­li­able ac­cess to the grid or tox­ic fuels. The WakaWa­kas sup­port the wo­men en­tre­pren­eurs in their busi­ness and re­duce the house­hold costs on en­ergy and light.
